put an egg on it

My recent food philosophy. I used to be squeamish around any egg with moving parts, but my how things have changed. I put an egg on it any ol' time now.

Current fave egg substrate? Martha's gringo version of vegetable bibimbap (white girl Seoul food? Ha. Sorry about that.). Now, I'm no expert on Korean food, but I'm certain that this "simplified" version is not 100% legit (I have no idea what the difference would be; if you do, please enlighten me), but all I know is I made this for lunch 3 days in a row last week. Oh yeah.

I make it with whatever I have on hand, as it's pretty much a template: rice + veg + egg + flavors... if I have these basics, I'm good to go:

a pretty egg, gorgeous leftover red Thai rice, the holy flavor trinity (sriracha, dark sesame oil, tamari) and... well, it's garlic. You know garlic.

today's veg selection + some onion slices (camera shy). I usually like scallions best, plus some cabbage (we were out). The kale is frozen from the garden. Did you know you can just tuck kale un-blanched in the freezer? It does great.

Martha's recipe doesn't call for these, but I really can't get enough sesame flavor.

I find this dish to be so filling and satisfying and perfect on a cold, drizzly day. Did I mention it's a one pot, one dish meal? Check out the recipe and get improvising!

perfect lunch. 3rd day in a row. #creatureofhabit
one of last week's very happy meals

  3. my goal: to eat as amazingly as you do.
confession: i've only ever (!!!) eaten eggs scrambled or hardboiled. i loathed them until my mid-twenties and just can't muster up the desire to branch out. runny yolks seem so gross to me. but i'm all growns up now. time's a wastin'. and this may just be the kick in the pants i need.

confession number two: and this one is ka-ray-zee. i've never even tried sriracha. everyone i know seems to worship it. and yet i haven't even tried it. what's wrong with me?!

    anyhoo. consider me inspired!

    1. Oh girlfriend, I'm about to jump in the car with a bottle of sriracha! Do you like the spice?? It occurs to me every now and then that some people don't care for fiery food. But, if you do, get thee to some 'rooster sauce' -- as some call it here.

I literally used to gag at any runniness... still do if the whites aren't cooked completely. In this type of dish, I stir the yolk in well, and it's less of an in-your-face element. Totally hear you!

  4. I love this! And I love yolks runny, but I go through phases...I'm kind of an 'over medium' girl. I love how you make such cool lunches. It's usually leftovers around here... I'm inspired. I'm also going to make Jora's suggestion this week. Can't wait! And freezing kale? cool! Maybe I can grow some this year in our miniscule garden box. I will forever have an image of your gorgeous gargantuan kale plant in my mind (from instagram). I want that!

  5. oh-- and are you referencing Portlandia's "put a bird on it?" So funny.

    1. Sadly, I don't think we get the channel for Portlandia, though I love that show from afar! I think I heard the bird ref somewhere, so maybe a subconscious reference?

  6. I've never made Bibimbap but this looks pretty easy. I love eggs in all their forms, except super runny whites. Eww. Thankful for the reminder on the Orangette recipe that I printed eons ago but forgot to try. I also recommend this egg/rice combo:

  7. I am right there with Sara on the runny-issue. I trust you and your culinary style so I might go for it. The whole house loves fried eggs except for me. Might I re-use your "trinity" reference? That is so awesome. You know 2 babies have changed my tastes. I am a spice lover. Yes, the crack-cake girl is a spice lover. :)

    1. Yes, Nanny -- you may use the trinity. Put it on some eggs! :)

  8. I'm all about putting eggs on things over here and hot cock makes everything better (that's what sriracha is called round here). Did you see that egg tower on http://mynewroots.blogspot.com/2012/02/veggie-egg-tower-of-power.html? Looks so yummy. I rarely have much lunch time.

    1. lol!!! hot cock? you guys. I might adopt that name, except Jacky will probably spout it all around preschool this fall. consequences of cleverness.

The tower of power looks delicious. It's now on the list, thank you.
